50,000-seat stadium, hotel to be built on former Tsukiji market site in central Tokyo

TOKYO — A 50,000-seat stadium will be built on the former site of the famed Tsukiji market in the Japanese capital’s Chuo Ward.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced on April 19 that a consortium of 11 companies, led by Mitsui Fudosan Co. and including the Yomiuri Shimbun Group and Toyota Fudosan Co., has been selected to redevelop the former site of one of the world’s largest fish markets. Construction on the stadium for baseball and other sports, as well as a hotel and a mixed-use building, is planned to begin in fiscal 2025, with completion scheduled for fiscal 2038.

According to the metro government, the facilities are expected to host international sporting events, concerts and large-scale exhibitions. An international conference center and theater hall are also planned.

The former Tsukiji market site, owned by the Tokyo government, is about 20 hectares. After the market functions were relocated to the nearby Toyosu district in Koto Ward in 2018, a large parking lot was created and used as a transportation hub for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. The metro government in 2022 began to look for redevelopment business operators. Two groups submitted project proposals, and a screening committee of outside experts conducted the selection process.
